Bright Ideas Fund round two, deadline 31 May 2017

Business development support, grants of up to £20,000 and opportunities to visit other community businesses are available from the Bright Ideas Fund. The funder expects to award around 80 grants over the whole programme.

What is a community business?

"Community business are businesses that are locally rooted, accountable to the local community, will benefit the local community and have a broad community impact." For further details, read the guidance notes (page 7).

Business development support

Successful applicants will be matched with an advisor. Up to 15 days of business development support from Locality, Plunkett Foundation, or Co-operatives UK is available to help you develop your community business including:

  • Business planning
  • Market research
  • Options appraisal
  • Getting ready to trade
  • Community shares
  • Contract readiness


Once accepted onto the programme, and after receiving business development support, community businesses have the option to apply for a grant of up to £20,000. A business development adviser will work with you to help develop your grant application and a detailed budget and project plan.


Read the guidance notes then complete the eligibility check. If your community business is eligible you will get an email with a link to the application form.


The next deadline for applications is 31 May 2017.
