What is social investment?

Social investment is financial investment that seeks social and/or environmental returns and not just economic reward.

There are a number of different types of social investment including loans, bonds and shares.

Unlike grants, social investment is funding that you need to repay, often with interest. Investors will also expect your organisation to achieve social outcomes as a result of the funding, for example getting more people into employment.

NCVO and CAF Venturesome have developed an online guide, Social Investment Made Simple, which explains the main investment types available to voluntary and community groups and social enterprises.
