Sign up for a free website account

You will need to choose a user name, password and website name.

Your user name should be easy for you to remember.

Don't use a password that you also use in your personal life.

Keep your website name short and relevant.  Remember, because your website name has to be unique, you may not always get your first choice (just like when signing up for a free email account).

The website name that you choose will become part of your free website address.

Your free address will look like this... if you use this free programme:
https://sites.google.com/site/example Google sites
example.wordpress.com Wordpress
example.btck.co.uk BT community website builder
example.weebly.com Weebly

What about .org.uk or .co.uk?

.org.uk and .co.uk "domain names" are not available free of charge. However, you have the option to purchase a domain name (example.org.uk) if it is available. You can then link it to your free address - just like redirecting your post to a new address.

Nominet holds the "phone book" of website addresses that end ".uk".  You can use the "WHOIS" search to find out what is and isn't available.

Getting the website you want is a workshop presentation by Sarah Moss, Voluntary Organisation Support Officer, © Community Action Bradford & District.
