There’s life after redundancy
YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN BOSS WITH USBORNE BOOKS AT HOME, SAYS FIONA PRICE
Team leader Fiona Price had been with Usborne Books at Home for two years, building up a successful business selling children’s books around her day job, when suddenly she was made redundant.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER USBORNE?
I joined Usborne while I was on maternity leave with my second child, Megan. Although I was enjoying motherhood, I missed the buzz of business - so I researched many different home-based businesses.
Usborne presented the best opportunity and has a product I love, so having grown up as a total bookworm it seemed like the natural choice. I had already decided upon Usborne when I happened to meet my team leader, Natalie Fieldhouse, and the rest, as they say, is history.
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU
RETURNED TO YOUR DAY JOB?
After starting with Usborne, I went back to my day job when Megan was a year old. I had set my sights on promoting before I went back to work, but as with all the best laid plans it happened a month of two later, so I was juggling baby, being back at work and gearing up my team for promotion.
The Christmas season is always busy and this gave the team a great opportunity to go for it. I achieved promotion in November - six months after joining - which earned me entry into the Usborne Team Leaders Executive Club for four months from the January. This was the most incredible boost for my business, as lots of benefits are provided to support new team leaders in the growth of their teams. It provided a fantastic platform to establish my team and also helped me move towards finding the first person I could help mentor towards team leadership. I found it very fulfilling to help my mentee to her promotion and she now has a burgeoning business of her own.
HOW DID YOU MANAGE YOUR USBORNE
BUSINESS ALONGSIDE YOUR DAY JOB?
As I had already achieved promotion to team leader, it didn’t make sense to give up my growing business and, indeed, something I thoroughly loved. So my day job and Usborne business have run alongside each other for the past year and a half. It’s been pretty tough at times, but it’s entirely achievable due to the flexible nature of Usborne.
Recently my day job role was made redundant. After 17 years it no longer interested or fulfilled me and Usborne had whetted my appetite for running my own business and being my own boss. It also gave me the confidence to take my years of business experience and put them to good use. So now I have the opportunity to concentrate on my Usborne team, growing it further and devoting more time to it.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT
BEING AN USBORNE ORGANISER?
I love the culture of Usborne Books at Home. Not only have I been able to set up and grow my own successful business, fitting it around family and life in general, but I’ve also made some of the best friends I’ll ever have. The Usborne culture is supportive, rewarding and friendly with a fantastic team spirit, which makes it a very positive organisation to be part of. Couple that with the best children’s books around and it really is a win-win combination.
WHAT’S YOUR TOP TIP?
My top tip when embarking on a life choice with Usborne would be to ride the waves. Like any self employed business, it takes time and energy and there are highs and lows. However, I can guarantee that you get out of it what you put in. It’s amazing how all those seeds sown, telling people about what you do, come back to you to pay off with an invitation to do a book party or work with a school.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU
AND YOUR BUSINESS?
I’m always looking for the next challenge and am currently focussing on developing further team leaders within my team, so that I can become a group leader by the end of this year. I’ve also started to grow my team overseas, which is very exciting. I’m constantly setting goals for myself and find the progress Usborne offers is very addictive. I still love the books and indulge my own children on a regular basis, so although I’ve had a lack of hours to fit things in over the past couple of years it’s never difficult to fit in something you love.
